An overwhelming majority of eligible workers at the Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law have formed a union, Brennan Center United, composed of workers from legal and non-legal departments and nearly every occupation across the organization. They are affiliated with United Auto Workers, UAW Local 2320, a “national local” union also known as the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW). The Brennan Center for Justice is a prominent nonpartisan think tank known for its evidence-based work and advocacy for democracy reform and justice.

Brennan Center United is waiting for the Brennan Center’s executive leadership to grant voluntary recognition to the union and begin bargaining in good faith.

“We are committed to the organization’s vision for American democracy and justice and believe that workplace democracy is instrumental in realizing this vision, both within our organization and throughout our society,” Brennan Center United says in its mission statement. “From protecting the right to vote to ending mass incarceration, the Brennan Center strives to ensure that everyone has a voice in our democracy. We take pride in our work, and our union aligns with the Brennan Center’s values, objectives, and belief in a free, just, and democratic society.”

The announcement comes as a number of similar organizations have recently unionized, including the national staff of the American Civil Liberties Union, the Brookings Institution, the Center for Reproductive Rights, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Urban Institute, and the Open Society Foundation. Additionally, workers at The Atlantic and NARAL publicly announced yesterday they are seeking voluntary recognition of their union – the same day as Brennan Center United.
